The Justice Department said today it wants more information from 11 Democratic congressmen before deciding whether to embark on a preliminary investigation of allegations that Reagan Administration officials illegally aided Nicaraguan rebels.

In a letter to the House members, the department said it would review their request, but it asked for additional details. The congressmen asked the department two weeks ago to authorize appointment of an independent counsel to investigate possible involvement with the contras by Vice President George Bush, CIA Director William Casey and other Administration officials.
