3 Slain in India Bank Holdup; Sikh Caught
Suspected Sikh extremists killed three people Thursday while carrying out the biggest bank robbery in five years in Punjab state, police said.
The manager of the State Bank of India in the town of Talwara, a customer and a bank guard were killed and one person was injured in the raid by four gunmen who seized 2.2 million rupees ($176,000).
Police said one of the gunmen was captured outside the bank. They identified him as Satnam Singh, wanted for a previous bank robbery and the 1984 murder of a former member of the Punjab Assembly. Sikh militants frequently rob Punjab banks to finance their violent campaign for an independent homeland.
