PREP FOOTBALL : Miscione Runs for 348 Yards, 4 Touchdowns in Esperanza’s 49-24 Win

Esperanza High School tailback Mike Miscione rushed for 348 yards and 4 touchdowns in 24 carries Friday night to lead the Aztecs to a 49-24 rout of rival El Dorado in an Empire League game in Bradford Stadium.

Miscione’s 348 yards was the second best single-game total in Orange County history. The county record is held by Dana Hills’ Jim Gleed, who gained 418 yards against Laguna Hills in 1979.

Miscione, a 6-foot 1-inch, 184-pound senior, broke Jim Farrell’s single-game school record of 255 yards set in 1984.

Miscione reacted with disbelief when told how many yards he had gained.

“You’re kidding,” he said. “That means steak and lobster for my offensive line.”

Miscione, who had 254 in 17 carries by halftime, now has rushed for 1,179 yards in 182 carries this year.

Esperanza (3-1-1 in league and 6-1-1 overall) was stopped by El Dorado (2-3, 2-6) on its first possession, but then the Aztecs went on to score touchdowns on their next six possessions.

Miscione scored on runs of 64, 47, 13 and 11 yards as Esperanza built a 42-6 lead midway through the third quarter.

Esperanza junior Clint Holt had a big night, too. He scored touchdowns on a 47-yard reverse, a 45-yard reception from quarterback Mike Moneymaker and a 13-yard interception return.

El Dorado quarterback Doug Yates, who completed 8 of 19 attempts for 203 yards with 3 touchdowns. But Yates was sacked 10 times for 56 yards in losses. Esperanza linebackers Greg Roseen and Kevin Webb each had four sacks.

Golden Hawk receiver Chris Facione caught 3 passes for 108 yards, including touchdown receptions of 38 and 44 yards.

Esperanza had 562 yards total offense, 491 rushing. El Dorado had 204 total yards, only one rushing.

Esperanza has defeated El Dorado three straight times but still trails in the series, 7-6.
