Uranium fuel loading began at the nation’s most expensive nuclear power plant near Oswego, N.Y., after scuba divers helped repair a mechanical problem that caused a one-day delay, officials said. The loading at the $5.8-billion Nine Mile Point 2 plant had been delayed by a problem with placing key neutron-emitting devices in the reactor vessel, said a spokesman for Niagara Mohawk Power Corp., owner of the plant. The devices, rods that emit neutrons that collide with the uranium fuel, were to be fitted into a grid mechanically by an underwater spring-loaded device, the spokesman said.
