More than 1,000 demonstrated in San Francisco, demanding release of Jews held in the Soviet Union. Carrying signs and balloons reading “Let My People Go” and “Free Soviet Jews,” the crowd gathered outside the locked and silent Soviet consulate to hear speeches by recent emigres, sing folk songs, and sign petitions addressed to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. One block of Green Street in the Pacific Heights district was barricaded to traffic while protesters, onlookers--and vendors hawking shirts, books and snacks--crowded into the roadway. A police barricade separated the consulate gate from the crowd, and there were no arrests.
