Republican Dan Quayle easily defeated political newcomer Jill Long to win a second term in the Senate. Incomplete returns gave Quayle 61% of the vote to Long’s 39%.

In the 8th District, Republican challenger Richard D. McIntyre held a narrow lead over Democratic Rep. Frank McCloskey. In 1984, McIntyre was certified as the winner by the Indiana secretary of state, but the Democratic-controlled House voted to seat McCloskey, prompting a brief GOP walkout.

In other House races, Democrats were ahead in five, Republicans in three.
