China plans to set up Chinese-language schools in Africa as part of an effort to attract more Third World students to China, the China Daily newspaper newspaper said Wednesday.

Students from developing countries have decreased since the late 1970s and are now outnumbered by Japanese and Europeans, the paper said. It said there are 300 African students in China this year.

The planned language-training centers in Africa would replace courses in Peking and thus shorten the time foreigners stay in China, the daily said. Learning Chinese and then such subjects as medicine and engineering in China can mean an unbroken stay of as long as seven years, it said.
