MINNEAPOLIS — Perennial presidential candidate Harold E. Stassen, dubbed the “boy wonder” when he was elected governor in 1938, lost the congressional bid that would have put him back in office after a 44-year absence.
Incumbent Democratic-Farm-Labor Party Rep. Bruce Vento defeated Stassen, an Independent-Republican, in Tuesday’s 4th District race by a 3-1 margin.
The 79-year-old Stassen, a seven-time presidential candidate, had been reelected governor for the second time when he resigned in April, 1943, to serve in the Navy during World War II.
