Higher Standards for Training Teachers Outlined
The state agency that licenses teachers has adopted tougher standards for teacher training in California colleges and universities.
The action Friday by the state Commission on Teacher Credentialing shifts the focus from completion of courses to demonstrating actual competence in the classroom and motivating students.
Richard Mastain, commission executive secretary, said, “These new standards reflect the consensus . . . regarding what new teachers should be able to do.”
Under the new guidelines, 70 California colleges will have to set higher admission standards, provide better supervision and cooperate with local schools in teacher placement.
