The Israeli Supreme Court rejected an appeal for freedom from retired Ohio auto worker John Demjanjuk, whose lawyer said Israel could not prove that his client is the notorious Nazi war criminal “Ivan the Terrible.” Demjanjuk, 65, a Ukrainian-born naturalized American from Cleveland, was indicted Sept. 30 on four counts of “crimes against humanity” during World War II for operating the gas chambers at Treblinka death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland, where hundreds of thousands of Jews and other minorities were put to death.
