The World : Iraq Hits 2 Gulf Tankers

Share

Iraqi warplanes hit two tankers in the Persian Gulf in a renewal of raids on shipping after a recent lull. Both vessels were part of an Iranian shuttle ferrying crude oil to the southern gulf, where it is transferred to tankers lying outside the war zone in the northern gulf. Shipping sources said the 115,871-ton Angel, flying the Cypriot flag, was damaged and that its crew was taken off safely. Lloyd’s Shipping Intelligence later said that the 116,404-ton Iranian tanker Khark had also been hit and was aground and on fire. There was no word on casualties. Three Dutch tugs were reported heading for the vessel.
