Many in the audience thought it was just part of comedian Red Skelton’s act when he asked if there was a doctor in the house during a benefit performance attended by doctors at the Anaheim Convention Center. But apparent heat exhaustion forced the 73-year-old performer to cancel the rest of his appearance at the show, which was to raise money for Loma Linda University Medical Center’s department of internal medicine. Convention center event coordinator Bill Harper said Skelton asked the audience to excuse him, walked offstage and was escorted to a first aid station, where his blood pressure and pulse were checked by several doctors who were attending the show. Harper said Skelton appeared to be “feeling much better” by the time he left the center in his limousine.
