About 5,000 Poles cheered Solidarity leaders, including founder Lech Walesa, at a church service in the port city of Gdansk marking the sixth anniversary today of the government’s recognition of the now-outlawed union. “Let us go ahead with the union’s activities,” Walesa urged, despite the fact that the labor union has been banned since a military crackdown in December, 1981. Solidarity was born as a result of a strike in Gdansk’s Lenin Shipyard in August, 1980, and its legal recognition was ordered by a court on Nov. 10, 1980.
