New Life Begins in Jail Restroom

Share

A veteran Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy was called upon Monday when a pregnant woman waiting to visit a prisoner at the Men’s County Jail suddenly went into labor. He delivered.

Eva Cedillo, 23, of Sylmar was taken to the women’s restroom while other visitors sought help. Gary Wilkerson, 39, with 15 years in the Sheriff’s Department and with paramedic training, happened to be working overtime on guard duty in the parking lot.

He was called by radio to the restroom, where he delivered a 7-pound, 7-ounce girl about 3:20 p.m. Two nurses from the jail infirmary arrived in time to assist.

Baby and mother were taken by ambulance to White Memorial Hospital where they were reported in good condition. Authorities refused to identify the prisoner Cedillo had gone to visit.
