GE said it will close its color television tube plant.

According to General Electric officials, the shutdown of the cathode ray tube operations in Syracuse, N.Y., will occur in July and will result in the elimination of 790 jobs. Company officials said the tube manufacturing division can no longer compete in the highly price-sensitive market. The shutdown will not directly affect employment levels at GE’s other Syracuse operations, where the company employs about 7,000, spokeswoman Connie Grasso said. However, tube division employees with high seniority will be able to bump or replace workers in other General Electric operations.
