Election Post-Mortems

I am getting angry at the unconcerned, non-involved segment of our population who blithely inform all and sundry that they didn’t vote because (1) they were busy working, or (2) they were too tired, or (3) they preferred to watch TV or some other more important activity. These are the same persons who complain about taxes, lack of sewers, poor schools. They want all the goodies of this nation but none of the responsibilities.

I would suggest that non-voting become a felony or a misdemeanor except that I am not sure these persons deserve the benefits of this nation--its freedom of choice.

But we could, for example, allocate two hours on Election Day for the purpose of voting; employees could take those hours off. Perhaps the voting stub with their name on it could later be presented to their employer. Or we could relocate election booths near the working areas, and disregard the present precinct system. The idea that voting must be made “easy” for these individuals is repulsive to me, however.

Finally, one might predict that these who want no part of their government will inherit a government they do not want; that theory has one glaring contradiction: those who voted, who performed their duty as citizens, will inherit the same government.

To conclude and repeat, I am disgusted and ashamed of my fellow Americans. They are too busy chasing the dollar to preserve their nation.
