Bicycle riders who stray onto city sidewalks will be required to carry a warning bell or face a fine of up to $100, according to an ordinance approved Tuesday by the City Council.

The ordinance, which becomes effective Dec. 19, requires riders to equip their bicycles with a bell or horn capable of being heard up to 100 feet away if they want to ride on sidewalks. The bell is to be sounded when bicycle riders are passing pedestrians on sidewalks. In all instances, bicycle riders are required to yield the right of way to pedestrians when riding on sidewalks, according to the ordinance.

The ordinance was proposed by Councilman Evan Anderson Braude in response to complaints from senior citizens.
