Administration’s War on Drugs
Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III’s comments, advocating that employers conduct surveillance of workers in the locker rooms, parking lots, and local taverns attests to a disturbingly narrow view of human relationships.
Surviving the battle of international competition will require more, not less, harmony between labor and management. Meese’s zeal to eradicate drugs has apparently blinded him to the fact that productive working relationships are based on mutual respect and cooperation. The heavy-handed approach he suggested may be valid in a penal institution, but it is untenable and inappropriate in the workplace.
Meese would drive a wedge of distrust between management and employees at a time when it is critical that we find new ways of working together more effectively.
