Demolition of the historic main building of the Huntington Sheraton could begin as early as next spring, according to developers who have been granted a zoning change that allows them to proceed with plans to raze the Pasadena hotel and replace it with a replica. Preservationists gave up their struggle to renovate rather than tear down the building, which was closed last October because it did not meet earthquake safety standards, after the Board of City Directors approved the required zoning change. The developers, Huntington Hotel Associates, estimate the cost of razing and rebuilding the building at about $38 million and hope to complete the project within two years, a spokesman said.
