Elephant, 59, Dies

OSNABRUECK, West Germany —
Toni, West Germany’s oldest elephant, has been put to death at age 59 because of ill health, the Osnabrueck zoo announced Wednesday. The cow elephant died Tuesday after years of struggling with increasing paralysis of the trunk and arthritis in her hips, zoo director Wolf Everts said.
