Culver City : Society to Care for Costumes
The Culver City Historical Society on Monday was designated official caretaker of about 70 costumes donated to the city by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios in the early 1970s.
The City Council gave the society permission to examine and catalogue the costumes and determine their condition. The costumes, stored in a city building next to the city bus yard on Duquesne Avenue, have not been displayed since 1982 when they were exhibited at a fashion show at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.
The society plans to inventory the costumes and determine the cost of restoring some of them, said society President Lupe Smith.
Dennice Lancer, a former MGM seamstress hired by the society to identify the actors and actresses who wore the costumes, said no one knows how much it will cost to restore the costumes. She said some of them, stored in cardboard boxes, have been damaged by pests.
