A former Oxnard police officer convicted of raping a 20-year-old Simi Valley newlywed on the kitchen floor of her father’s home was sentenced Thursday to three years in state prison.

The former officer, Kenneth Michael Myers, 30, of Newbury Park could have received up to 16 years in prison on his conviction for rape and burglary in the April 23 assault. But Ventura County Superior Court Judge Marvin H. Lewis imposed the minimum sentence, saying Myers had a clean record and was “not likely to repeat this aberration.”

Prosecutors recommended that Myers be imprisoned for eight years.

The rape occurred after the woman had just returned from her honeymoon and was picking up some of her belongings at her father’s house in the 1600 block of Cayton Avenue.

Myers, who was off duty at the time of the attack, testified during the two-week jury trial that he was looking for a friend’s home, saw the front door was open and followed the woman inside.

Myers admitted sexually assaulting the woman by removing some of her clothing, but denied raping her. He said he was stopped just short of the rape by police, who were called to the house by the victim’s father.

After the incident, Myers was suspended without pay and resigned from the Oxnard police force.
