SAN FRANCISCO —
Tinkerbelle is holding her waistline but Pennie will have to go on a salad diet to shed 1,000 pounds or so.
When the two San Francisco Zoo elephants had their first weighings Thursday, the California Highway Patrol had to come to the rescue with two portable truck scales.
Tinkerbelle, 20, and Pennie, 32, took turns, adroitly balancing on two feet at a time on each scale. Pachyderm keeper Connie Channon was appalled when Pennie tipped the scale at 11,100 pounds. Tinkerbelle was a relatively svelte 6,712 pounds.
