College Roundup : 5 UCI Tennis Players Gain 3rd Round

Five UC Irvine tennis players advanced to the third round of the Southern California Intercollegiate Men’s Tennis Championships Thursday at UC Irvine.

Darren Yates, Shige Kanroji and Mike Cadigan each had first-round byes and then won their second-round matches. Yates defeated Mark Tafoya (New Mexico State), 6-2, 6-2; Kanroji defeated Steve Joyner (Cal State Fullerton), 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, and Cadigan defeated Chris Cabral (Cal State Fullerton), 6-2, 6-0.

Trevor Kronemann won two matches, defeating Tim Travis (New Mexico State), 6-1, 6-2, and Enrique Guajardo (Pepperdine), 6-2, 6-2. Mark Kaplan, who won his first match by default, defeated Tim Mahaffey (UC Santa Barbara), 6-3, 6-1, in the second round.

The tournament’s top two seeds, Robbie Weiss (Pepperdine) and Rim Trigueiro (UCLA) also advanced to today’s third round, which begins at 9 a.m. The fourth round (round of 16) is scheduled to follow at 11 a.m. with doubles matches at 2 p.m.

About 100 players from 15 schools are participating in the tournament, which concludes with finals Sunday.

In water polo action:

UC Irvine 14, University of the Pacific 6--Tom Warde scored four goals, and Julian Harvey and Matt McLaren each scored three goals to lead the Anteaters to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. win at Irvine’s Heritage Park Pool. UCI, ranked sixth in the nation, is 9-1 in conference, 16-10 overall, and will host first-place Pepperdine (10-0) at noon Saturday.
