The Nansen Medal, the United Nations’ highest recognition for aid to refugees, was presented to Canada on Friday, the first time the honor has gone to a nation rather than an individual.

Although no event was singled out for the award, Canada allowed 155 Tamils from strife-torn Sri Lanka to stay after they were abandoned three months ago by a ship in the Atlantic Ocean and rescued from their lifeboats off Newfoundland.
