Wilson Wants Tighter Army Curbs on Ammunition, Explosives Thefts

WASHINGTON — The Army should further improve its new safeguards against thefts of ammunition and explosives, Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) said Friday.
While praising the Army for improvements it has made to reduce thefts of such things as ammunition, grenades and anti-personnel mines, Wilson said even tighter controls are necessary.
His recommendations, which stemmed from a General Accounting Office report that examined problems at Ft. Bragg, N.C., called for better physical security for ammunition and explosives, replacement of a loophole-ridden accounting system and stronger penalties for having unauthorized munitions.
Heads Task Force
Wilson is head of a Senate Armed Services Committee task force that has been looking at the thefts of weapons, ammunition and other military gear. Earlier this week it held a hearing that underscored how easily grenades and other items can be stolen from military bases.
Wilson plans a hearing on Monday into a “sting” operation conducted recently near Camp Pendleton, Calif.
