The last contingent of U.S. soldiers sent to Bolivia last July to help in a crackdown on cocaine trafficking left the country. A group of 52 Americans and three Black Hawk helicopters were flown to Panama, marking the end of the withdrawal that began three weeks ago. The soldiers provided logistical support to Bolivian drug agents in raiding cocaine-processing laboratories in the tropical northern Beni region. U.S. officials said the crackdown would continue, with U.S.-trained Bolivians.
