Mother Teresa made an unannounced visit to San Francisco to hear vows from 11 new members of her growing order, the Society of the Missionaries of Charity. The 1979 Nobel Peace Prize winner also used the occasion to denounce abortion and to offer comfort to victims of acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Mother Teresa, 75, won the peace prize for her work with the dying and destitute in Calcutta, India. Her order, founded in 1948, has more than 2,500 sisters in 75 countries.
