Candidates from Brazilian President Jose Sarney’s centrist coalition led in major states, according to preliminary results in the nation’s first parliamentary elections since military rule was ended last year. Official results are not expected for several days. However, the official government news service, EBN, said that the Democratic Movement and Liberal Front, the political bases of Sarney’s coalition, are “certain victors” in 10 of the country’s 23 gubernatorial races and “probable victors” in six others. Results were undetermined in the remaining seven states.
