Chrysler Corp. and Renault broke off negotiations.

According to a published report, Chrysler and the French auto maker have terminated discussions on a major joint venture. A story in the Detroit News said unidentified sources speculated that the talks involved a stock purchase that could have given Chrysler part or all of Renault’s 46.1% interest in American Motors. The story said other sources thought the negotiations might have involved Renault’s marketing of Chrysler cars in Europe.
