Police said 36 Shell gasoline stations in Copenhagen and other parts of Denmark have been vandalized by anti-apartheid activists protesting the oil company’s involvement in South Africa. Copenhagen police said activists cut pump hoses, poured sugar or cement into fuel storage tanks and broke windows in Shell station buildings. Five activists were arrested. They identified themselves as members of the Solidarity With Steve Biko organization. Biko was a black activist who died in South African police custody in 1977.
