San Diego
Councilman William Jones was appointed deputy mayor Tuesday, replacing Councilman Ed Struiksma. Jones, 31, represents the 4th District and was appointed to the seat in December, 1982. He succeeded Leon Williams, Jones’ old boss, who was elected to the county Board of Supervisors.
Jones, who received a unanimous vote from the City Council, will assume his new duties Dec. 8. As deputy mayor, Jones will chair council meetings when Mayor Maureen O’Connor is absent and will represent the city at other events that O’Connor cannot attend. He was elected to a four-year council term in 1983.
