18 L.A. ARTS GROUPS WIN BRODY GRANTS : BRODY ARTS FUND NAMES 18 RECIPIENTS FOR L.A. GRANTS

The Brody Arts Fund, an endowment created to assist needy artists and emerging arts organizations, has awarded 18 Los Angeles nonprofit arts groups a total of $57,150 in its second round of grants.

Fifteen groups, all with annual operating budgets under $100,000, received organizational grants ranging from $1,000 to $6,000. The awards were made for their innovative work in the expansion arts, defined by the National Endowment for the Arts as urban, rural, tribal (Native American) and minority arts. The organizations are:

American Indian Registry for the Performing Arts ($2,500), Brockman Productions ($3,500), City Stage/Inner City Arts Center ($1,000), Desert Opera Theatre ($2,000), Eastwind Sinfonia ($1,500), Floricanto Dance Theatre (for a joint concert season with Avaz and Karpatok dance troupes) ($6,000), Friends of Charles White ($2,000), Great Leap ($4,000), INCA/Peruvian Music and Dance Ensemble ($3,500), Jazz Heritage Foundation ($2,400), Lola Montes and Her Spanish Dancers ($3,500), Onochie Chukwurah’s Rhythms of the Village ($2,750), Repertory Dance Theatre ($1,000), Southeast Symphony ($4,000), Young Saints Scholarship Foundation ($2,500).

Three groups received Brody recognition awards of $5,000 each. Cited for outstanding achievements in the expansion arts, they are Plaza de la Raza, Visual Communications and the Woman’s Building.

The Brody Arts Fund was initiated last year through a four-year partnership between the Expansion Arts Program of the National Endowment for the Arts and the California Community Foundation, within which the fund operates.
