Frederick A. Wang has been named president of Wang Laboratories, the Lowell, Mass.-based computer and office equipment maker announced Wednesday, confirming long-held speculation that Wang would succeed his father, founder An Wang, in the presidency.
An Wang, chairman and chief executive, had resumed the presidency of the company in 1985 following the departure of president John Cunningham. Insiders said Cunningham believed that he would be bypassed in favor of the 37-year-old son as the elder Wang’s successor. However, in announcing his son’s promotion Wednesday, An Wang said he has no plans to retire.
Frederick Wang joined the company in 1972; his most recent position was executive vice president and treasurer. He will retain the treasurer’s post.
