Azusa : City Studies Links Purchase

Share

The City Council has voted to investigate the possibility of purchasing a portion of the 106-acre Azusa Greens Country Club for a park.

Councilwoman Jennie Avila’s request for a study was approved 3 to 0, with council members Lucio Cruz and Bruce Latta abstaining.

Cruz and Latta are among four of the five council members who own or once owned property near the golf course and may have a conflict of interest in voting on hotly debated plans by owner Johnny E. Johnson to replace the links with 1,164 single-family homes and apartments.

Three council members must vote on required zoning change, and the city is grappling with the question of who should vote on the matter.

Avila proposed the purchase as possible compromise between Johnson and neighborhood residents, who strongly oppose the development.
