Huntington Park : Council Recall Drive Fails

Share

A drive to recall Councilmen Jack W. Parks and Tom Jackson is apparently off as proponents failed to meet the deadline to turn in about 1,800 signatures needed to force a special election.

Laverne Jones, deputy city clerk, said “nothing was filed” with the clerk’s office as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Proponent Guadalupe Levy could not be reached for comment. The other proponent, Joe M. Ortiz, died of a stroke in September. The petition--certified for circulation in August--claimed that the councilmen are “insensitive to the wishes of the people” and that rapid redevelopment has contributed to a shortage of senior citizen housing. Jackson and Parks called the charges frivolous and defended the city’s record in attracting senior citizen housing in their rebuttal.

The recall drive was marred by an incident in which a worker collecting signatures was arrested. The worker, Alfreda Brown, eventually pleaded guilty to misrepresenting the recall petition as a petition against toxic waste.
