Mozambique’s national news agency said that about 200,000 people have fled into neighboring Malawi in the last six weeks to escape fighting between guerrillas and government forces. The agency said that rebels of the Mozambique National Resistance also crossed into Malawi after hacking 44 peasants to death in two massacres. Mozambique said the rebels left carrying furniture and other loot. The Marxist Mozambique government long has claimed that the rightist guerrillas are based in Malawi. Malawi, which denies this, is the only black African country that has relations with South Africa.
