Santa Monica : Hearing Set on Moran Home

The Landmarks Commission will hold a public hearing at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 11 on an application seeking city landmark status for a Victorian home formerly owned by tennis star Gussie Moran.

Friends of the Gussie Moran House filed a petition last week asking landmark status for the 19th-Century Queen Anne-style house at 1323 Ocean Ave. The commission agreed to hold a public hearing at its next meeting in the community room at Santa Monica Place, according to city planners.

A city-sponsored survey found the home to be of sufficient architectural and historic interest to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, planners said.

Spokeswoman Julie Lopez Dad said the Friends are afraid that the picturesque house, in a commercially zoned area, might be demolished for offices.

Mark Kalisch, an attorney representing the owners, objected at the commission meeting to the landmark designation. In an interview, he said owners have no plans to demolish the house.
