Santa Monica : New English Program Offered

Share

Senior citizens willing to become tutors and non-English-speaking students are being sought for a new literacy program. Students and at least 25 tutors are needed by Nov. 30.

The one-year pilot program seeks to raise employability among people in West Los Angeles, Mar Vista, Venice and Santa Monica who cannot speak English.

The program receives public and private funds and is administered on the Westside by the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. Tutors must be at least 60. Students of any age are eligible. One-on-one sessions will meet for one or two hours a day, up to three times a week.

Volunteer tutors will be trained in a 12-hour course on how to teach English, using phonetics. Tutors do not need teaching experience.
