Sophomore midfielder Alvin James scored a second-half goal and junior goalkeeper Tony Hannum recorded his fifth shutout of the season to lead North Carolina-Greensboro to a 2-0 victory over UC San Diego Saturday to win the NCAA Division III soccer championship.

It was the fourth time in six years that the Spartans have won the Division III national championship. North Carolina-Greensboro also won titles in 1982, 1983 and 1985. The four victories are a record at the Division III level.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead when the referee ruled that a UCSD player deflected the ball into the net after North Carolina-Greensboro’s Willie Lopez sent the ball toward the goal.
