Unisys handed out its first 314 layoff notices.

The company plans to reduce its work force by a total of 9,600 employees as part of its plan to eliminate duplication in the company. The layoffs affected management and salaried employees. The company is the second-largest computer maker in the country and was formed by the merger last summer of Burroughs and Sperry.
