County supervisors on Tuesday accepted a $200,000 payment from a pipeline company that was accused of damaging the environmentally sensitive San Elijo Lagoon.

The board voted 4-0, with Supervisor Paul Eckert absent, to accept the settlement from San Diego Pipeline Co.

The agreement calls for the county to repair the damage and release the pipeline company from all claims associated with the 1985 construction of the liquid fuel pipeline through San Elijo Lagoon Regional Park in Solana Beach.

The county has already started the work, beginning with the removal of a gravel road from La Orilla Creek and the placement of soil, seeds and plants to control erosion in graded areas.

Supervisor Susan Golding, who represents the area, said the settlement will put the public “on notice” that the county will not tolerate any damage to environmentally sensitive coastal wetlands.
