Orange County Sheriff Brad Gates, who for years has refused to disclose concealed weapons records, must make the applications and permits available for public inspection, a state court of appeal ruled in Santa Ana. The decision was based on a state Supreme Court ruling six weeks ago in a similar case involving Los Angeles County Sheriff Sherman Block. The records will not immediately become available because the issue was sent back to Orange County Superior Court Judge Robert J. Polis. The appellate court found that there may be instances where Polis would need to delete portions of the records he deemed necessary in a closed hearing. Both the Los Angeles County and Orange County lawsuits were filed by CBS Inc., which claimed that it wanted the information for a series of investigative reports by KCBS-TV. CBS Inc. claimed that Gates and Block were violating the state’s Public Records Act.
