Muslim rebels shot down at least 17 Soviet and Afghan government aircraft across Afghanistan this month, Western diplomats said in New Delhi, India. The diplomats also reported intense fighting last week in Kandahar and said the Soviets may be having trouble supplying their garrisons there. The reports could not be independently confirmed as Western journalists have rarely been allowed into Afghanistan since the Soviet Union invaded in December, 1979.
