Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gerald J. Levie, appointed to the court in 1980 after spending years in private practice as a successful criminal attorney, died Tuesday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He was 66 and died after a heart attack and subsequent bypass surgery.

Levie was named on March 11, 1980, by then-Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. to one of 20 new Los Angeles County Superior Court judgeships created by the Legislature.

A memorial service is scheduled for Levie on Dec. 5 in Department 1 of the Superior Court. Levie is survived by his wife, Peggy; six children, and four grandchildren. The family suggests contributions in his name to a scholarship fund at Loyola Law School, where Levie graduated after World War II.
