Santa Ana : Street March Planned to Protest INS Activities
A coalition of community groups will hold a march Saturday to protest activity by immigration authorities in the county, a spokesman for the groups said.
“We are calling for this protest march to draw attention to the INS raids occurring on the eve of legalization,” said Frank Castillo, a spokesman for the Catholic Community United for Justice, a coalition of Latino and religious groups.
“It is inherently unjust for the INS to conduct these raids when, at the same time, the INS is encouraging people to apply for legalization.”
The INS has said it has cut back its roundups of illegal aliens since President Reagan signed a law this month giving amnesty to certain undocumented immigrants. The law forbids the INS from deporting anyone who may be eligible for amnesty.
But some Latinos in Orange County have reported that immigration agents are still asking them to prove their residency status, Castillo said. “My father was stopped last week. He’s a legal resident, and he’s been here for 30 years,” he said.
The march is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. in front of the Federal Building at 10 Civic Center Plaza, near Broadway and Civic Center Drive.
