The United States, France, New Zealand, Palau, Western Samoa, the Cook Islands and the Marshall Islands have pledged not to dump nuclear waste in the South Pacific, U.N. officials announced. The unprecedented accord bans dumping of radioactive wastes in the 200-mile zones around the Pacific islands. Australia and eight other governments in the region have approved but have not yet signed the treaty. The signatories agreed to “prevent, reduce and control pollution in the treaty area from any source.” The treaty, which must be submitted to the Senate before U.S. participation becomes official, will go into force after 10 governments have signed it.
