Marine biologists are puzzled by an undetermined illness that has caused an alarming number of sick sea lions to strand themselves along the Northern California coast in recent weeks. Within the last month and a half, California Marine Mammal Center researchers said, at least 11 beached sea lions were found alive and transported to the center. Symptoms included seizures, lethargy and respiratory distress. Of the 11 animals, seven died, two were still under intensive care and two were reportedly recovering.
