Orange County Roundup : UCI Women Open Season at UCLA

The UC Irvine women’s basketball team opens its season against UCLA in the Wooden Center at Westwood at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Dean Andrea returns for his ninth season as coach of the Anteaters, who were 14-14 last season.

UCI defeated an alumni team last Saturday, 50-38, in an exhibition game at Crawford Hall. Six-foot six-inch junior center Natalie Crawford led the Anteaters with 12 points, 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots.

UCI’s home opener is Dec. 13 against Santa Clara in Crawford Hall.

Professional motorcycle drag racers Mike Malone, Clyde Rawlings and Terry Vance will be featured at the Anaheim Motorcycle and ATV Expo scheduled for Dec. 5-7 in the Anaheim Convention Center.

They will answer questions about drag racing and promote motorcycle safety.

The show will introduce many 1987 motorcycle and ATV (all terrain vehicle) models and will include collector bikes, apparel and accessories, safety seminars, touring talks and demonstrations.

The show is open from 5 -11 p.m. Friday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children.

The first Surf Mart is scheduled for 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Dec. 12, on the Orange Fairgrounds at Costa Mesa.

Participants will be able to buy, swap and sell all surfing items, including classic long boards, wet suits, surf clothing and memorabilia.

Booths for sellers are available at $15 or $20. Setup time will be from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Gate 5. Admission is $3.

El Pollo Loco is sponsoring a Thanksgiving American Youth Soccer Tournament at several county school and community center sites today through Sunday. More than 3,000 children, ages 6 to 16, are expected to participate.

The semifinals are today and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Stacey Junior High School, Springview Elementary and Sowers Middle School in Huntington Beach; Gisler Elementary in Fountain Valley; Irvine Junior High in Garden Grove and the Balearic Community Center in Costa Mesa.

The finals will be held Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Stacey Junior High School.

Proceeds from all entry fees will be donated to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

The Notre Dame Club of Orange County is sponsoring several events in connection with Saturday’s Notre Dame-USC football game in the Coliseum, including bus trips and pregame and postgame rallies.

The club’s buses will depart from the Anaheim Marriott Hotel at 9 a.m. Saturday and return immediately after the game. Bus fare is $6 per person.

The pregame and postgame rallies will be held at the California Air and Space Museum, next to the Coliseum.

The SeaCliff Country Club in Huntington Beach is sponsoring a golf tournament Monday to benefit the Southern California affiliate of the National Society to Prevent Blindness.

The entry fees are $275 per person or $1,100 per team, which includes green fees, golf cart, lunch, designer sweater vest and various vacation prizes.

Five UC Irvine water polo players have been named to the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. all-conference team, including first-team players Chris Duplanty, Julian Harvey and Mike Halphide.

Anteaters Dan Smoot and Tom Warde were honorable mention.

Also, UCI’s Don Edwards was named to the first-team all-PCAA soccer team and Steve Shaw was named to the second team.

In volleyball, UCI’s Carolyn Janisch was named to the PCAA All-Freshman team.
