Brea : City Moves to Ban Sales From Pushcarts
Beginning Dec. 18, street vendors--known in the Latino community as paleteros --will not be allowed to ply their wares within the city.
On Nov. 18, the City Council gave final approval to an ordinance banning pushcarts--a typical sight on hot summer days when the pushcart filled with ice cream becomes very popular in many county neighborhoods, mainly in Latino areas.
City officials said they don’t have any pushcart vendors now but decided to adopt the ban to prevent their coming to the city. The council adopted the law after a vendor applied for a permit, city spokeswoman Bonnie Dwyer said.
Officials said they feared such non-motorized vendors would cause nuisance problems, such as litter, noise, blocking views of traffic and gatherings of people on streets.
The same day that the Brea council adopted its ordinance, the Anaheim City Council also adopted an ordinance banning sales from non-motorized vehicles selling in the streets. Latino leaders and vendors have criticized the law as discriminatory.
